Join St John Ambulance as a young volunteer
National first aid charity St John Ambulance offers two engaging youth programmes – Badgers and Cadets.
The Badgers programme is tailored for children aged between 5 and 10, and provides a variety of activities that teach essential first aid and other important skills and give participants a sense of accomplishment and confidence. The programme is designed to be both educational and enjoyable, making it a great way for young children to learn valuable life skills.
For older children aged from 10 to 17, the Cadets programme offers even more opportunities for personal development. Cadets participate in hands-on first aid training and work in the community, helping them build new skills and make new friends. The programme also includes competitions, and community events, all of which foster a sense of pride and unity. By joining the Cadets, young people can make a positive impact in their communities while gaining practical experience and confidence.

If these programmes sound like something readers’ children would find enjoyable and worthwhile, St John in Huntingdon has immediate vacancies for at least 15 children to enrol and learn first aid. There are 5 Cadet vacancies and a minimum of 10 as Badgers.
Lauren Sansom, an adult volunteer at St John’s Central Huntingdonshire network, said: “You’re never too young to save a life, as our Badgers and Cadets often show around the country. By learning age-appropriate first aid skills, these young people can really make a difference in their community. Enrolling your children in our programmes can provide them with invaluable skills and experiences that will benefit them throughout their lives. I look forward to hearing from any families who would like to hear more about these opportunities.”
Many young people who have participated in St John’s youth programmes have gone on to degrees and careers in healthcare and medicine. Many also chose to stay with St John when they reached the age of 18 and join the team of adult volunteers.
The adult volunteers have many opportunities within the charity and are a regular sight at public events around the country. They also deliver first aid training and have been closely involved with major national initiatives such as the COVID-19 vaccination programme.
Whatever their role with the charity, all are focused on providing lifesaving first aid in the community and at public gatherings and being there when people most need help.
