Petrified pets: RSPCA issues advice to help make Bonfire Night bearable

As Bonfire Night approaches, over half (55%) of UK pet owners dread fireworks season, with 43% having to change their lifestyle due to unexpected nearby displays. The RSPCA has issued top tips to help animal owners prepare for and manage fireworks.

Tips for the run-up to fireworks displays:

  • Identification: Update pet collars, ID tags, and microchip details.
  • Expert Help: For severe fear, consult your vet for a plan or treatment options, potentially leading to a referral to a clinical animal behaviourist.
  • Routine Adjustments: Gradually alter dog walking times to daylight hours. For horses and livestock, slowly introduce them to being stabled overnight if necessary.
  • Safe Havens: Create a ‘doggy den’ with treats and toys, ensure cats have hiding places, and provide extra bedding for small animals like rabbits and guinea pigs.
  • Calming Aids (Equine): Consult a vet about calming supplements or sedation for anxious horses.
  • Desensitisation: Gradually introduce firework recordings at low volumes (e.g., Sounds Scary) or use calming music like Classic FM’s ‘Pet Classics.’
  • Planning: Check for local firework displays and adjust walks. Speak to neighbours and organisers to find out dates and ask them to site fireworks away from animals. Consider attending public displays instead of having a backyard display, and always notify neighbours in advance.

During fireworks displays:

  • Bring Pets Inside: If bringing outdoor pets indoors, start this change early.
  • Soundproof: Close windows and curtains to reduce sound and visual stimulation.
  • Calming Music: Tune into Classic FM’s ‘Pet Classics’.
  • Stay with Pets: Provide comfort and reassurance.
  • Pheromone Diffusers: Discuss calming collars or diffusers with your vet.
  • Extra Bedding: Provide outdoor small animals with extra bedding or cover their housing for sound-proofing.
  • Distraction: Engage pets in interactive play or give puzzle toys.
  • Avoid Displays: Do not bring pets to firework displays.
  • Secure Livestock: Keep horses and livestock secure in fenced areas.
  • Exercise: Give pets plenty of exercise during the day to reduce evening anxiety.
  • Positive Reinforcement: Associate firework noises with positive experiences using treats, playtime, or cuddles during quieter moments.

After fireworks season:

  • Share Experiences: Fill out the RSPCA’s survey to highlight the impact of fireworks.
  • Lobby for Change: Email your Member of Parliament to advocate for changes to fireworks legislation.

The RSPCA’s “Kind Sparks” campaign encourages responsible firework enjoyment to reduce the impact on animals.
