MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO CHILDREN’S LIFE CHANCES
Could you volunteer to listen to children read in school?
National children’s literacy charity, School readers is looking for volunteers in your community to listen to children read in primary schools.
Even before the pandemic, 1 in 4 children were leaving primary school unable to read well and our service is more in demand than ever after months of school closures. Worryingly, estimates suggest the most disadvantaged pupils are now seven months behind their peers. Children who struggle with reading are more likely to live in poverty and to be unemployed as adults.
No qualifications are required to join School readers as a volunteer, just a love of reading, some spare time each week in term time and a willingness to go where children need you the most. The joining process takes a few weeks so apply today!
“There is so much enjoyment to be had from the one-to-one sharing of a book with a child. I have had funny and fascinating discussions about ice-cream flavours, pirates, and David Beckham!” Janice, volunteer
